CMJ And Mediaguide Officially Launch New Monitored Charts

As announced on July 14, 2005, the CMJ Network joined forces with Mediaguide in a landmark partnership to provide artists and music industry professionals with detailed information on college and non-commercial radio airplay. That partnership became public 2 weeks ago as both CMJ and Mediaguide replaced some of their existing charts with the new, fully-monitored CMJ Select charts that are powered by Mediaguide. The changes include:

  • The Mediaguide College Select and the CMJ Core Radio charts are replaced by the CMJ Radio Select chart. Mediaguide monitors the airplay of 112 college and non-commercial variety stations that are also CMJ subscribers to create the CMJ Select Chart, which is available in both album and track versions.

  • The Mediaguide Independent-Only College Select chart is replaced by the CMJ Independent Radio Select chart. This chart uses the same panel as the CMJ Radio Select Chart, but excludes any releases from major-label artists. It is available in both album and track versions.

  • The Mediaguide College Metal Albums and the CMJ Loud Rock Crucial Spins charts are replaced by the CMJ Loud Rock Select chart. Mediaguide monitors 70 college and non-commercial stations that both play significant metal, punk and other loud rock genres and are CMJ subscribers to compile the chart. It is available in both album and track versions.
These charts are viewable through Mediaguide MusicMonitor, CMJ Industry Area and CMJ Information Network either on a subscription or a la carte basis.

As also announced in the press release about the partnership, CMJ will sell Mediaguide's ArtistMonitor, A&RMonitor and MusicMonitor reporting systems along with their Information Network. In these reporting systems, subscribers may see airplay across all 2,500 college, non-commercial and commercial stations that Mediaguide monitors, regardless of their inclusion in the CMJ Select charts.

IAMA (International Acoustic Music Awards) Kicks Off

IAMA (International Acoustic Music Awards) promotes excellence in Acoustic Music Performance and Artistry. Acoustic artists in various genres can gain exciting radio and web exposure through this competition.

Participating sponsors and partners include Mediaguide, Acoustic Cafe and XM Satellite Radio. IAMA is open to all independent artists and labels. Unlike other music industry competitions, IAMA focuses on developing new markets for Acoustic artists, labels and CD releases.

Artists can win prizes in 8 different categories: Folk/Americana/Roots, AAA/Alternative, Instrumental, Open, Bluegrass, Best Male Artist, Best Female Artist, Best Group/Duo. There will also be an Overall Grand Prize winner awarded to the top winner worth US$6,600, which includes radio promotion to over 250 radio stations in US and Canada. Winning songs will be heard on radio. Winners and runner-ups will be featured on CD compilation.

Judging is based on excellence in music performance, songwriting/composition and originality. For more information visit http://www.inacoustic.com

Below are some of the top songs or albums from the A&R charts that Mediaguide creates. These are songs and albums that are either listed as self-released or put out under a label that the artist runs themselves and for which there are no other artists on the imprint. These represent the most airplay for new artists from the most recent chart week, 8-15 to 8-22.

Through A&RMonitor, users can listen to 30 second clips of these songs.

The following stations represent those that have shown support for the Early Risers above. The Mediaguide A&RMonitor product is primarily designed to inform A&R professionals, music supervisors, distributors and others seeking new talent of self-released or small independent label songs and albums receiving radio airplay. It is just as important, however, to highlight those radio stations that make our data possible; the more adventurous PDs and MDs that take the time to bring new artists and new music to their listeners.

For those stations that work with independent/DIY artists, if you would like to help bring as much visibility as possible to those local and regional artists that you have played for your listeners, make sure to have them submit music to Mediaguide just as they send music to your station. You can direct them to the Submit Music page of www.musicmonitor.com or www.artistmonitor.com either personally or through the submission information on your website.

For this week, Atlanta takes the prize for the most Indie-Friendly market with 3 out of the six stations.

In Honor and Remembrance of Robert Moog

…from Paul E. Wright, Vice President, Music Business Development, Mediaguide

Robert Moog, who created the first analog synthesizer, recently died in his home in Ashville, NC. Moog, whose name was synonymous with early synthesizers, suffered from complications related to a brain tumor at age seventy-one.

The Moog Synthesizer gave birth to new crop of musicians, such as Emerson Lake and Palmer, Tangerine Dream and Parliament Funkadelic. The technology spawned an entirely new industry that grew from analog to digital; from waveform manipulation to Frequency Modulation (FM) and sampling technology that powered the sound of the eighties.

It is quite an understatement to say that digital sampling plays a vital role in recording and electronic music environments today. The fact that Moog’s family has established The Bob Moog Memorial Fund dedicated to the Advancement of Electronic Music in his memory speaks volumes about his dedication to the art and technology.

Moog’s impact on various styles of music is too widespread to capture in a few paragraphs so I have decided to use one artist who has benefited from the Moog products to blaze his own path across the musical spectrum. In honor and remembrrance of Mr. Moog, the greatest attribute to his legacy is the talent of the artists that he has touched and the quality and longevity of their music. With funk as the basis of his impressive resume, Bernie Worrell has ridden the Minimoog, and most recently the Minimoog Voyager, to fame in rock, hip-hop, jazz and progressive music.

According to the Moog Music website, “in many circles Worrell needs no introduction. From his work as a founding member and musical director of Parliament-Funkadelic to his contributions to the Talking Heads, Worrell has been twice inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Songs such as ‘Burning Down the House’ and ‘Flashlight’ would not have been the same without him, and Worrell’s keyboard prowess has only grown since those classic recordings.” As one of the most sampled musicians in history, Worrell’s funky licks have appeared in hit songs by Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog, Ice Cube, En Vogue, Digital Underground and De La Soul to name a few of the direct beneficiaries.

Continuing his musical adventures, Worrell remains in demand as a performer with Bootsy's New Rubber Band Featuring Bernie Worrell; Jack Bruce & The Cuicoland Express Featuring Bernie Worrell & Vernon Reid and as keyboardist for Black Jack Johnson (Mos Def's band), Material, Praxis and others. Worrell is currently on the road with his own supergroup Bernie Worrell & The Woo Warriors and has recently been working with Les Claypool as the “Bernie” of Col. Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains, featuring Claypool and Guns & Roses guitarist Buckethead.

As with the creator of his instrument, Worrell’s impact is too wide to capture appropriately in volumes, let alone a few paragraphs. For the most recent few weeks, you can see below examples of the acceptance of his music, and therefore of Moog’s legacy, across different markets and radio station formats.
